About Denkit Hobbies
Our Story
Passion meets Play
Established in Margate in 1984, Denkit Hobbies has grown from a humble local shop into one of South Africa’s most trusted destinations for hobby enthusiasts. From the very beginning, our mission has been to share the joy of hobbies with our community. Guided by our motto “Passion Meets Play”, we continue to curate products that inspire creativity, excitement, and connection across generations.
A Family Legacy
Denkit Hobbies is proudly family-run, founded by Dennis and Kitty Steenmans — hence the name DEN-KIT. Their eldest son, Dean Steenmans, began working in the shop during school holidays and has since taken the reins of our South Coast store and online platform. Today, Dean ensures that customers nationwide enjoy seamless access to our wide range of products, whether through our website or visiting our store in Uvongo, KZN.
Racing heritage
Passion for Radio Control
Our dedication to radio control (RC) hobbies runs deep. Over the years, we have played a leading role in RC car racing both nationally and internationally. In 2002, South Africa hosted the World Championships for Electric Off-Road Racing, with Dennis serving as Race Director and Kitty as Race Control, while Dean proudly represented the country as its top performer.
From Dean’s first national title at age seven to his participation in eight World Championships, RC has been woven into our family’s story. With certified instructors and experienced staff, we continue to train and inspire hobbyists in the art of RC racing and flying.
A hub for the RC community
For decades, Denkit Hobbies has been more than a store — it has been a hub for the RC community. Until 2024, we hosted monthly races at the Douglas Mitchell Racing Club in Uvongo, offering both On-Road and Off-Road tracks. While the tracks have since closed, our commitment to supporting hobbyists remains strong. We provide expert guidance, spare parts, and service to ensure enthusiasts can continue enjoying their passion with confidence.
